Common Volkswagen problems

The most common reasons for Volkswagen car problems and in some cases recalls has been fuel bubbles, ignition switch issues putting VW Routan minivans on the recall list, and the NA Golf and GTI after a steering issue. Recently we saw Volkswagen recall models with 1.8T engines, Passats for headlight woes, and Tiguan/Jetta Hybrids over gearbox issues.

It’s no secret that the auto industry has seen records broken with USA car recalls in recent years and Volkswagen wasn’t isolated from the problems. The automobile manufacturer has its headquarters in Germany, and started out in the 1930s with sales taking this brand to the biggest in Europe.

Volkswagen’s Beetle, Golf, and Passat have all been recognized as some of the best-selling cars ever. We have also seen Volkswagen AG recall cars within its other brand, which included Audi after fuel injection system problems. You can discuss Audi problems on another page Car Recalls page, or leave any issues you have in regard to Volkswagen below and reach support channels to the right.

Anxiuosly waiting to hear from Audi to see if my 2012 S4 will be included in the latest recall due to a faulty fuel injection system.

  • Nigel

I thought the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta recall due to faulty software was supposed to begin this month, yet I have not heard anything.

  • Doug

My 1995 Volkswagen Polo takes several times to start from cold, although once running seems to be fine, what could be the case?

  • Stacey

Still waiting for my 2014 Volkswagen Beetle to go in to have its fuel rail replaced.

  • Wayne

Just recently my 1989 VW Golf has started to have issues while at idle. Someone did suggest an issue with its throttle position sensor, could this be correct?

  • Mike

MY VW Jetta has developed an issue where it will shift hard between 2nd and third gear and then a transmission code 1166 appears. What is the problem here?

  • Phil

The rearview mirror on my 2006 Passat no longer dims how it should do. Does this mean the entire unit needs to be replaced?

  • Jane

I have a VW Golf 1.6 TDi and for some reason the engine stays at the same speed or slightly speeds up when I remove my foot off the accelerator.

  • Betty

For some reason the headliner in my 2006 Volkswagen Jetta has started to separate from the roof. Seems strange for this to happen to a car that is just 9 years old, and aGerman one at that.

  • Nigel

Is it a common problem that the 2006 VW Jetta burns its oil, and if so was there any sort of fix for it, as I have no clue at all?

  • Gary

Having only done 22,000 miles in my 2011 VW Routan, is it right that the brake pads should have worn out already? Ok, so I pretty much know the answer to that, but surely Volkswagen should be accountable?

  • Freddie

What would be causing my 2013 Volkswagen Jetta to be pulling to one side? I thought it was misaligned, but all is fine, and have taken to to the dealer, although they cannot find anything wrong. I have a strange feeling a brake could be binding, yet VW missed it.

  • Kathy

Am I the only Touran owner that finds not having a spare wheel a huge issue. It would not be so bad even if it was a space saver, bit to not have one at all does seem rather silly.

  • Leo

The check engine light on my Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid keeps coming on. I have taken it to the dealer several times where they have found nothing wrong and so reset it each time. However, it has now come on for the fifth time, are we missing something?

  • Mike

Has anyone else had an issue with the parking brake on their 2012 VW Jetta, as mine has now failed? I took it to the dealer, where they said this was not an issue they were aware off, although still repaired it for free.

  • Wayne

When I drive my 1999 VW Sharan on very short journeys all is fine, but if I have been driving the vehicle for too long and the transmissions begins to get hot, then it starts to have hassle changing gear. There are times when it drops down a gear, yet will not change up again – please does anyone have any ideas?

  • Isabelle

The clips on my 2008 VW Rabbit air con vents have snapped off, and have just found out that if I would have taken out the extended warranty, then they would have been covered. I know have a bit of an issue, as the dealer said I cannot buy these clips anywhere, and they won’t even sell me them to me – so where else can I get them?

  • Mel

My 2012 VW Passat is not idling as it once did, as it now idles erratically, and while it does not affect the performance of the car in anyway, it can become very annoying. This was not a cheap car, and being German built you would not expect such a thing in three years.

  • Harry

The gears in my 1998 VW Saharan will not work how they should when the transmission gets hot. This is a huge issue because the auto transmission will often struggle to get into the correct gear, and when it does there is a loud thud each time. When the car has just been started up though, everything works fine.

  • Cheryl

I have a check engine light that has appeared on my 2011 VW Touareg with the error code P202B. I have since called Volkswagen for advice on what this error code could be, so that I could resolve the issue myself, but they are unwilling to help, unless they do the work for themselves. I have also heard that I am not the only one to have this issue, yet there is still no recall for this.

  • Jules

There are many times that I regret buying my 2012 VW Tijuan, as there have been so many issues such as with the brakes and the steering not feeling like is should. However, Volkswagen were very quick at fixing this issue. There is now a new problem, and that is with the drover door bolts, as they came loose a few days ago and my door is ready to fall off.

I have now become too scared to drive this vehicle because it seems to be one problem after another, and so I have now decided to fight VW so that they finally do something about this and receptacle the car, I wonder what my chances are?

  • Chase

I’m now starting to wonder if I have a case because I am considering taking VW to court over miss selling the diesel car that I bought from them. They said it only let out certain emissions, when we now know this to be a false claim. I am sure I will not be the only one thinking the same thing, but do we have a case?

  • Isaac

I bought this 2011 VW Vento a few weeks ago and from the second day there was a strange sound coming from the front end of the car. it is very hard to describe, and I feel that I should not have to pay for the repair. Even if I bought this car in a private sale, do I have any sort of right for them to take the car back and give me a full refund?

  • Miles

The power doors on my 2010 VW Jetta was not working how it should. The issue first started with the one door, which was the front passenger one, and then slowly moved to the other doors. However, each time I have had to change the door mecanisim on each door, which has now cost me over $1,000. Surely this is not right, as I can understand one mechanisim going, but not all four?

  • Julie

Every time I press the button for my electric door mirror to go in, there is a warning that tells me the flashers are no longer working, but when I bring the mirrors back out, all is fine again. Could there be a break in the wire?

  • Paul

I’m now starting to worry about my VW, as it has that particular 3 liter, V6 TDI engine in, and so fear it could be recalled at a later date.

  • Jane

The brakes and rotors have worn down much faster on my 2011 VW Routan than I ever thought should happen – especially as I have only done 27,000 miles, and drive very safely. Is this a common issue, or just a one-off?

  • Peter

Well, Audi has just admitted that the EPA were correct, and that the 3.0-liter TDI is also at faulty, and so some car models going back to 2009 can now be affected.

  • Shelly

My 2006 VW Jetta keeps backfiring, but only when the engine is cold. I have been told by various dealers that this is normal, but clearly it is not. I say this because I have contacted other Jetta owners and they say they have never had this issue, so cannot believe that these dealers have lied to me. What should be my next corse of action>

  • Lilly

My VW Vento does not drive how it should, as there is a horrible sound coming from the front end. It is a hard sound to describe, all I know is that it sounds abnormal.

  • Jane

I took my 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit for a service and they were unable to reproduce the issue I have been experiencing where the doors keep locking an unlocking on their own. This has started to drive me mad, and just do not know what to do next. Do you think there could be a short in the wiring, or is this something complete different?

  • Steve

I really wish I never bought this VW Vento, as I to am having issue with its clutch, just like so many other owners out there. I really do wish I read all the forums about this horrible vehicle before I bought it.

  • Josie

VW Golf problems with starting, and I have already changed the crankshaft sensor, the battery and many of the other things you can think of, but still no joy. This does not happen all the time, but is is now being more frequent.
