MINI USA problems

The MINI USA brand is owned by BMW Group and will run into problems like many other automakers, although MINI car recalls haven’t been as widespread and in fact are extremely rare.

You are able to connect with other MINI owners in the United States, UK, and other countries using the comments section below. This allows Car Recalls readers to share common MINI problems to spot any new faults, which could end up with a recall in time.

If any official recall notices take place for MINI USA, then you will find the news headlines below the discussion area. You can also use the official vehicle identification number tool to see details on safety recalls going back over 15 years.

Access to official social channels for MINI, service support, and the VIN tool can be seen to the right. This brand is continuing to open new dealerships across the US and the company has a good track record when it comes to recalls, but problems do occur and we’d like to hear about them.

My MINI Copper S has now developed the dreaded death rattle from the engine bay, just contacted the dealer and it looks to be the timing chain.

  • Jane

Has anyone else had an issue getting their ignition key into their MINI Cooper, it often takes a lot of wiggling about in order to get the key to slide in. By the way, mine is a 2012 model?

    • Nigel

Try using some WD40, as the tumblers are most likely probably getting hung up inside of the lock cylinder.

  • Ben

A alternator warning light has appeared on my MINI Cooper dash, which in turn has led to the powering steering not working correctly. Is this a coincidence, or are the two connected?

  • Roger

I have read somewhere that there is a cheap fix for the airbag warning light problem on older Minis, but cannot remember what it was. Please help.

  • Paul

The Power Steering Pump on my wife’s Mini One kept on running evening after turning the engine off. Is this a common problem, and if so, what’s the remedy?

  • Phoebe

There is a pinking noise from engine of my 2007 Mini, although it does not cause any reliability issues.

  • Claire

The computer in my 2015 Mini keeps malfunctioning, as it registers errors that are not there.

  • James

The power steering on my 2005 MINI Copper just stopped working for no reason while driving – good job my reactions were quick. This keeps happening every now and then; does this mean there is a power steering pump failure?

  • Caroline

Well, there is goes, as I have finally fallen victim to the dreaded clutch problem on my 2009 Mini Cooper JCW. Just like I was warned, Mini put this down to wear and tear, yet they know this to be a common fault.

  • Lisa

Seems like I have become yet another person fallen foul to the power steering issue. My car is the 2006 Mini Copper. The strange thing is, when the power steering goes and you turn the engine off and re-start the steering comes back.

  • Marion

The hood scoop on my 2011 Mini Cooper has started to warp. I think it is the heat from the turbo, so doe anyone know if this was an issue Mini resoled for free?

  • Claire

Wy does there seem to be a huge amount of carbon build up un my 2008 Mini Copper S engine? I had it cleaned and was told bad fuel caused it, yet the issue has come back – and that is even after making certain that the rule I used was of a high premium.

  • Johnny

No matter how many times I try, my 2008 Mini Cooper just will not start. I have replaced the battery, alternator, the leads, plugs, but still no luck/

  • Walt

The problems have started to mount for my 2006 Mini Cooper S, as I had to first replace a broken front axel, then the brakes started to vibrate, so had to be replaced, and now there is a coolant leak – now what?

  • Jeff

My 2009 JCW Mini will no longer start. This is the latest in a string of other issues, and what makes it more annoying is that this does not happen all the time. Needles to say, when the car has gone to the garage to diagnose the issue, the engine starts with no trouble at all.

  • Clair

Well, what a bad design on the 2012 Mini Clubman, as the hood scoop on my particular version lets in rain water into the engine compartment. this has caused a few issues with the electric, yet Mini have not been prepared to issue a recall for it, as I know ‘m not the only to have such an issue.

  • Daryl

I have a 6 year old Mini John Cooper Works model, which had been running fine up until now. However, out of the blue the car tries to start and almost kicked in, but just dies again. This keeps happening, and the strange thing is, there is a very strong smell of gas, so was wondering if too much fuel is being pumped into the system, and therefore flooding the the engine?

  • Tara

The heater on my 2011 Mini Cooper does not heat up as warm as it should, although it has trouble starting when very cold. Although, I winder if this is linked to the fact that the engine temperature does not really get up to what it used to, so it seems the engine is running too cool.

  • Heather

I had to take my Mini Cooper Clubman back to the dealer because of bubbles that started to appear on the paintwork, but the guy said that this was not covered, as it was not a factory defect. However, after taking the car to both body shops that the dealer recommend, both said it was caused by an issue with the “e”coat. Now correct me if I am wrong, but surely that is covered by the warranty?

  • Donny

The seat belts on my 2006 Mini Cooper S are all twisted and no longer retract. Should I take it to a main dealer for the issue to be fixed, or would an independent dealer be just as good, or is this even something that can be attempted yourself?

  • Josh

I thought I would replace the brakes on my 2007 Mini Cooper S myself, but for some reason I am finding it very hard to push the calipers in so that the new pads can fit. Is there any sort of trick I can try in order to get the calipers in far enough?

  • Lisa

I’ve had my Mini Cooper S for 5 years and and in 35,000 miles have gone through two clutches. I am in no way a bad driver, as have been driving for 26 years, and in that time have ever only had one clutch go on me. Both tomes BMW have tried to put the blame on me, but I think they are using inferior parts. Is this a common issue with this model?

  • Calvin

Has anyone else had an issue with the air intake scoop warping on the Mini Cooper S because of the amount of heat coming from the turbo? It is clear this is a factory defeat, and so owners should not have to foot the bill for the repair.

  • Doris

My mini Cooper S only has 35,000 miles on the clock, yet its clutch has already gone. I cannot get this done through warranty, as the car is now 6 years old. However, surely a clutch should not go with so few miles on the clock.

  • daisy

The airbag light kept coming on my Mini dashboard. It cost me $1,500 for them to find out what the issue was, and a further $1,000 to fix the issue, how on earth can that be right?

  • Conn

I have a 2007 Mini Cooper S with 43,000 miles and my clutch is failing. Went to the Mini dealer and was given an estimate for $3,600.00 to replace the clutch and flywheel. I am not excited about installing the OEM clutch and flywheel as there is a definite quality issue with these parts. I am surprised that there is not a lawsuit filed against the substandard parts given the numerous complaints of failing clutches on low mileage Minis. I have driven manual transmission cars since I was 16 and never had one fail. I can only hope that a case is made against Mini to fix this issue.
