Hyundai Problems

Hyundai problems will diverse greatly based on model, so this could have included transmission problems with Hyundai’s Santa Fe in the past to detaching shift cable issues on Sonatas. The latter made the Hyundai car recalls list around the middle of 2014, although this brand has had its share of other problems over the years.

The Hyundai Motor Group comes second only to Toyota in Asia, at the time of writing, and has its headquarters based in South Korea. In some of the busiest car recall years, we have seen Hyundai vehicles recalled due to side-airbag concerns, bad wiring harnesses on the 2015 Hyundai Sonata, and detaching shift cables.

If you are experiencing any problems with your Hyundai car, then detail them in the comments below and see if others are reporting the same faults. You can reach out to Hyundai customer services and perform vehicle identification number lookups for recalls by using the information on this page.

Out of the 208 affected 2015 Hyundai Sonata vehicles, it had to be my one included in the recall. Now I’m waiting to hear when the axle shaft will be inspected and possibly repaired.

  • David

My 2011 Genesis has that brake light issue we were warned about, how come Hyundai have yet to contact me?

  • Charlie

The Hyundai IX35 fuel filter problem does not want to go away, although the carmaker has yet to announce a recall, even though there have been almost two dozens reported problems.

  • Janice

I keep getting key not detected on my 2010 Hyundai 145, has anyone else had such an issue?

  • Stan

My Hyundai iX35 has developed that horrible fuel-filter problem, and have noticed Hyundai have yet to do something about it – give us this recall please.

  • Claire

The engine on my 2013 Elantra will not turn over or start.

  • Nick

For some reason my 2013 Hyundai Elantra gets about 20 percent less miles per gallon than many of my friends, I don;t drive it any different to them, so why would there be such a difference?

  • Kathy

The brakes on my 2013 Hyundai Elantra have started to make a grinding noise and the dealer will not pay for the repair. All they say that it is an unkown problem and they do not cover it.

  • Carl

Why is it that the ABS light will not go off on my 2008 Hyundai Veracruz? I do fear that it could be the hydraulic module, which could cost around $3,000.

    • Jeff Clair

We are having the same problem with our 2008 Hyundai Veracruz. We have stopped driving it because it has become a deathtrap when the cars stalls in traffic. I believe since there have been numerous recorded incidences, this should be recalled by Hyundai.

  • Janice

I just cannot believe that my 2011 Hyundai Sonata engine has seized on me. The car has done just over 100,00 miles and there were no warning signs, as the engine was working fine, then all of a sudden it just stopped working. The dealer found that there was sludge in the engine and that it would cost close to $10,000 to repair, which is a silly sum of money.

  • Jamie

For some reason the sliding door on my 2007 Hyundai Entourage no longer closes. Please help, and yes I have greased the track.

  • Sarah

Every time I drive my 2003 Matrix I seem to loose coolant. I just cannot seem to find the case of the issue, does anyone have any ideas?

  • Chelsea

My 1990 Hyundai Scoupe seems to pull back when trying to put my foot down. Having said that, once I have been driving the car for around ten minutes it seems to drive normally.

  • Kitty

Has anyone else had their crankshaft on their Hyundai Getz crack on them? it has been proven to be a manufacturing defeat, yet the dealer is not willing to repair it.

  • Dino

There is a strange clicking noise from the steering in my 2011 Hyundai Sonata, which only happens when turning. It also makes a horrible rattling noise when driving on uneven surfaces. I’m wondering if this was a widespread issue, as have heard of couple more cases of the very same issue?

  • Greg

The Air Con in my 2010 Hyundai Veracruz is now making a clicking sound. The dealer has assured me that this sound is normal, but I do find this hard to believe. If this is in fact that case, then I highly doubt I will buy another Hyundai, as it would seem hey are using inferior parts for their Air Con system.

  • Dale

One day out of nowhere i noticed a knocking noise coming from my 2012 Hyundai iLoad van while changing gear. I contacted the dealer, only to be told that this is common with the iLoad range, and that it is not really an issue because the noise does not exceed unbearable limits. However, to me the noise will only cause more issues, as it could soon move from the differential to other areas of the vehicle, such as the transmission. Surely if this is a common issue, then there is a flaw and calls for a recall?

  • Jade

Has anyone else noticed how dim the lowball seems to be on their 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe, or is it just my particular model? I took the vehicle back to the dealer, where all they did was adjust then so they aim little higher. However, it’s still not perfect and am now wondering if I should consider replacing the bulbs with those after market ones that claim to be much brighter than the standard ones?

  • Daisy

The media center for my 2012 Hyundai is not working, and so took it to the dealer, where they said the USB did not work. However, after a couple of trips it turned out to be the reversing camera, radio CD and the Sat-nav needing to b replaced. Just thought I would mention that in case anyone else is having the same issue.

  • Ella

Please give me some advice, I have a 1995 Hyundai Scoupe and the moment i reach around 60 or 70 miles an hour the car begins to shake, although if I go any faster the shaking stops. I have just had the tires replaced, and at the time also had them balanced, and the wheels were aligned, so seems strange that the issue started after this.

  • Mary

Every now and then when i drive my 2012 Hyundai Genesis at around 15 to 20 miles per hour it will stall. I have since taken it to the garage, where they tested it for several hours, but the issue never occurred for them, and so I am stuck. I know that this is happening, just not at the times when you really want it to. My question is, has anyone else had this problem, and if so how were you able to resolve it?

  • Sonny

Several months ago I noticed that the paint started to fade on my 2001 Hyundai Tiburon, but only in certain areas. The faded areas measure from 3 to 7 inches. Does anyone know what could cause the paint to fade like this?

  • Laura

Oh dear, looks like I have fallen foul to the broken crankshaft issue that I have read so much about on the Getz. Has anyone managed to get Hyundai to admit responsibility for this issue yet?

  • Jackie

The starter on my 2010 GLS 2 had stopped working and so I had it replaced, although 15 months later it stopped working again, which I found strange. I then replaced it again at a cost of sound $100, but here we are in 2015, and the starter has gone yet again, and now wonder if there is any fault with the car that could put a strain on the starter?

  • Cacie

The dashboard lights on my 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe keep going out, and have also been told the rear exterior lights also go out. I am nit sure if it is an easy fix, or if I should go back to the dealer?

  • Steve

The manage phone system in my 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe is hopeless, as I have stored all my numbers into the system, yet when I ask it to call a number, the wrong person is displayed all the time.

  • Jennifer

I get a clicking noise when I go round a bend in my Hyundai Getz. I was told it was the wheel bearing, as it had too much play in, but after getting that replaced the problem is still there. I am not happy about this, especially as they now believe it to be the CV joint. Do you think there is any way in which I can force them to do this other job for free, seeing as though they got the first diagnoses wrong?

  • Jason

Not at all happy with the quality of some of the paintwork on my 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring, as paint has started to peel from the faux chrome that covers the door handles. OK, so I know this is nothing to do with the overall paint job, but surely they should come up with something that lasts a lot longer than a couple of years, and then starts to look like a very rough, and poorly kept vehicle?

  • Kelly

I have been known to panic brake on more than one occasion because I have been involved in a serious accident in the past. However, rather than feel the pulsing of the brakes through the medial the car just wants to lock up and stop be abruptly. The car in question is the Hyundai Sonata, and has now been back to the dealer twice, once for brake fluid leak to be resolved, and the other to have the master cylinder replaced. However, the issue still goes on, and so am now at a loss, especially as the dealer said they are unable to replicate the issue.

  • Jennifer

I have a Hyundai Santa Fe and its heating systems is weird because it will go on really high on its own and Also, when turned it off, it will come back on its own.

  • Pauline

The steering on my 20078 Hyundai Tuscon stiffens and feels as though I no longer have control after have been through standing water or if it rains very heavy. Does anyone know what can cause this?

  • Jacob

The alignment on my 2013 Hundai Santa Fe seems to be out, even though I have paid several times to have it checked and realigned. It seems to be ok for around 4,000 miles after being realigned, and then goes out of alignment once again, which is very strange.

  • Debby

Hi, the ABS/traction control light stays on permanently on the dash. Is this a known problem?

    • Raymond Davis

      wheel speed sensor in rear

  • Grant

I bought a brand new 2016 hyundai elantra and have about 12k miles on it now and have been having frequent problems with the car overheating while idling and i have had my battery die several times as well

  • Derek

Hyundai is recalling 81,000 of their 2016 Tucson crossover vehicles because of a problem with their secondary hood latch. There is a chance that this latch could disengage, in which case the hood could open while driving, which could cause a serious accident. I have just been told that my recall will begin from July 15, so I am now driving my vehicle very carefully, and not taking it on the highway, as to not drive at high speeds.

  • Stephanie Prime

I have a 2007 Hyundai Tiburon with a little over 85000 miles. I started having problems this afternoon, when I put it in reverse and give the car gas it starts bucking. I also noticed if I put it in drive you hear a grinding noise. Has anyone else had this problem.

  • Michael Alan Hughes

I own a 2001 elantra. I was getting around 28 mpg around town and close to 32 on the highway.

I took my car to have the oil pan changed and tires rotated. They did the top gasket on the motor too. We didn’t put on the cover afterwards either. After I got my car back, my mpg dropped to around 21 miles per galllon. WTF!

I had the oxygen censor only on the exhaust replaced. To get to the oil pan they removed part of the exhaust and it had one of the o2 censor on it.

Any ideas on what’s happening to my car gas millage?

  • Cherrii

I have a 2012 Tucson & the clock, radio, XM radio & all of the lights on the display keep turning off and then on again. I can not figure out why! I have checked every fuse and every wire possible and still cannot figure out what the problem is. Can anyone help… has anyone else had the same problem?

  • Jerry

Trust my bad luck, as my 2014 Sonata Hybrid is included in the anchor pretensioner recall – arghhhhhh

  • Jake

Just learned that my 2013-2014 Sonata is also being recalled due to prematurely wear on the engine. I’m worried about driving it now, especially as I have to wait another month before Hyundai start the repairs.
